The 13th Annual Christmas Quiz Results and Answers _POSTEDBY cat -
From Jim: ...After much delay I am finally ready to reveal the results of the 2015/6 Habs Christmas Quiz. I hope that you all enjoyed taking part. Click here for the answers and here for the coke bottle answers. I’m sure you will all be amazed to hear that not one team this year managed full marks on any of the rounds.

The closest were smart ale(x) Nick and co who despite correcting the quizmaster of Halifax Town’s current non league status were unsure of the Cartwright Rules. Even the Houston Habs though were unsure of these rules so I guess that’s not so bad after all. With a big movie producer and Empire subscriber on their team, the Catford Habs also came close in the film round and fell only because of a lack knowledge of Spencer Tracy’s career. With the UK’s Ambassador to Djibouti and African Union Representative on their team the Addis Habs should’ve cleaned up on the Africa Round but could only muster a 9/13. At least they did correctly identify the Ethiopian Coke bottle as did the Shropshire Habs of course. Well done to all of those who realised that all the answers in the ZZZZZ round did in fact start with Z.

So without further ado the results:

1) 61 – Catford Habs
2) 54 – Kent Habs
3) 53 – Addis Habs
4) 50 – Bedford Habs
5) 44 – Houston & Shropshire Habs
7) 43 – Torremolinos Habs
8) 32 – Somerset Habs

So congratulations to the Catford Habs who now have the honour of setting next year’s quiz...

Bikram Yoga: Slacking off _POSTEDBY cat -
In 2014 I took 247 hot yoga classes, and in 2015 I took 203. Lifetime total: 3,328 (first class was March 21st, 2003). In 2014 I taught 147 Bikram yoga classes, and in 2015 I taught 117 (first class was December 28th, 2007). Owning a house in Galveston, where there's no hot yoga, has contributed to the drop in numbers!

Due to website issues I am unable to upload the quiz. I have therefore emailed it to Paul, David and Richard, requesting that they forward it to any family members who plan to participate at different locations. Alternatively send me, Catherine, an email if you want a copy. Last year's rules apply.

2014 Christmas Quiz answers and results _POSTEDBY cat -
Hello all Habs and Honorary Habs!

Lovely to see all the Habs Christmas Quiz entries this year. The four quiz team answer sheets have taken priority over my English & Maths marking load this holiday. (Can I get away with giving the quiz to my class (8-9 year olds) for their English homework on my return!?)

We hope you enjoyed (at least some of) the questions. We found it tricky to pitch them at the ‘right’ level, not too easy or hard, and Quizmaster 2013, Ant, was certainly a very hard act to follow. Looking forward to being back ‘on the other side’ next year!

Temptation to give bonus points goes to ... the Houston Habs for:

Their answer to ‘Which Christmas slogan was introduced by Clarissa Baldwin of Dogs Trust in 1978?’ ... ‘Keep Calm and Neuter On’.

Stamping ‘Lovely couple (extra point?)’ over our onesie/Christmas jumper picture!

We are also concerned that our answer for the grammar/tense question did not precisely match my Dad’s, who is always my font of all knowledge, especially where the English Language is concerned!

The total number of possible points was 55. We gave one point for each correct answer, half a point for a partially correct answer (in true festive spirit!), and we rounded up the grand total as necessary. We also deducted the traditional one point for each additional participant in teams of more than 4.

You can see the questions and answers by clicking here.

So ...

In 4th place, with 24 points, the Houston Habs (5 participants) (Catherine, John and friends) – apologies with hindsight for the lack of US related questions.

In 3rd place, with 33 points, the Mill Close Habs (9 participants) (Richard, family and friends. And Helen, we hope you are feeling better too!)

In 2nd place, with 34 points, the Bedford Habs (4 participants) (Paul and family) – Just FYI, Dad voluntarily commented that ‘Chris and Clare were impeccably behaved’ throughout the Bedford Habs Quiz answering process(!)

AND IN 1ST PLACE ... clear and worthy winners, back at the top, our 2014 Hab Champions, with 41 points (2 more than last year’s winners’ total), THE EMSWORTH HABS (7 participants - David and family).

Happy New Year!

Lots of Love, Quizmaster (and mistress) 2014,

Clare and Chris xxx

The 11th Annual Habershons.com Christmas Quiz _POSTEDBY cat -
Click here for the 2014 Habershons Christmas Quiz!

This year it has been compiled by last year's winners, Clare and Chris. As usual, the first place is blank, so you can open and print it without looking. I did notice some colour pictures in it, though, so you might want to print in colour.

You know the rules, but here they are again:

This quiz is open to any household that contains a Habershon, a née Habershon, a Habershons.com commenter, or anyone who resides on the Branch Office page.

One point will be awarded for each correct answer. One point will be deducted/added for each household with more than/fewer than four participants. For example, if there are ten participants, six points will be deducted. And if there are only two participants, two points will be added.

The team with the highest score will receive a £12 (or equivalent currency) Amazon gift certificate. If there are more than eight entries a second prize will be awarded. Correct answers and the team results will be published on the website as soon as possible after the closing date.

No looking up answers on the internet or in reference books. All answers must come straight from your heads. Submit your answers to the Webmistress (cjathearn @ gmail.com) no later than 11pm GMT on Friday, January 2nd, 2015.

As usual, no correspondence will be entered into, and the Quizmaster's decision is final. Only one entry per household.

Bikram Yoga: Staying healthy _POSTEDBY cat -
In 2013 I took 288 90-minute hot yoga classes. Lifetime total: 2,878 (first class was March 21st, 2003).

In 2013 I spent more time at my cold job and only taught 143 Bikram yoga classes (102 fewer than last year). Lifetime total: 1,263 (first class was December 28th, 2007).

And you will be pleased to know that I did not jump out of any more aeroplanes. I did make two more attempts but was thwarted by last-minute cloud cover. Since then, the obsession has diminished, although I still follow skydiving activities avidly, wishing it could have happened but knowing it probably never will. Perhaps another tandem jump on my birthday.

Articles: Christmas Quiz 2013 results. Clear winners from down South! _POSTEDBY cat -
Hello all Habs (and assorted associates!)

It's your 2013 Quizmaster here - Antony (Ant) Mason, brother of Libby. Many thanks for participating in the quiz - six teams this year. Very sporting of you!

I hope you enjoyed the challenge. I was pleased to see that almost all the questions were correctly answered by at least one team, so they were clearly not so outlandishly fiendish as to stump you all. Except one: Branston Pickle is now Japanese-owned, would you believe!

I gave one point for each correct answer, and half points (total rounded up) for a misspelt answer or (very) near miss. With the 8 US states beginning with M, there were 57 points in total to play for.

As you know, a point is deducted for each extra participant over the normative team number of four.

You can see a full list of the questions and answers by clicking here.

So here are the results in reverse order:

In 6th place, with 20 points, the Houston Habs (a total cruelly diminished by the festive-spirited size of the team: 13 participants!) (Catherine, John and friends)
In 5th place, with 25 points, Mill Close (7 participants) (Richard and family)
In 4th place, with 30 points, the Bedford Habs (6 participants) (Paul and friends)
In 3rd place, with 32 points, the "Salisbury Entry" (5 participants) (Nick and family)
In 2nd place, with 33 points, the Emsworth Habs (7 participants) (David and family)

AND IN 1ST PLACE, clear leaders with 39 points, THE KENT HABS (5 participants) (Clare and friends).

Happy New Year!

Surprise Peas nostalgia _POSTEDBY cat -
Fresh garden peas are very difficult to find over here, and if you do find them they are expensive. Our local HEB was selling them last week, already shelled, at $1.48 a bag. That's an excellent price. Then I was wondering if anyone remembered Surprise Peas. Are they still around in England? I used to love them. I did a Google search and the only ones I could find were in New Zealand. Yes, I've ordered three bags and am paying more to have them shipped to the U.S. than they cost. This is what happens when you're stuck in the office on a sunny Friday afternoon and are feeling hungry.

Bikram Yoga: 2012 Bikram numbers (and a special offer!) _POSTEDBY cat -
In 2012 I took 278 90-minute hot yoga classes. Lifetime total: 2,590 (first class was March 21st, 2003).

In 2012 I taught 245 Bikram yoga classes. Lifetime total: 1,120 (first class was December 28th, 2007)

About the same as last year, although the teaching numbers may go down in 2013 as my other job has become extremely busy.

I still love Bikram yoga and love teaching it. Here's an offer . . . if any Habershons (brothers/nephews/nieces) want to try it I will pay for your first 10-class package!

And for the record, in case it becomes a habit, I also jumped out of aeroplane eight times in 2012.

  Battlefield tour _POSTEDBY cat -
David and Libby and 18 friends took a coach over to Ypres and Aras last week on a battlefield tour. They visited the Thiepval Memorial on the battlefield of the Somme and found Leonard Osborne Habershon's name. He was son of Samuel Osborne Habershon, who Ed named Sam after. Samuel had died before his son was killed but Leonard's mother Catharine was still alive. David found all this in the book which is kept at all Commonwealth War Graves (there are thousands along the Western Front) and all the Habershon details were in it. Leonard was 26 when he was killed. Click below for some pictures from the tour:

Depressed after Jump #7 _POSTEDBY cat -
I'm not very good at this. Feeling very down today. The weather was so perfect for skydiving yesterday, sunny with no wind, and I was hoping to make two jumps. One as a tandem and then one on my own if I could demonstrate to the instructor that I was ready to continue with the Student Training Program.

The tandem was a bit of a disaster. You will remember that the big problem last time was my lack of upper body/arm strength. Well, for the past three weeks I've been working out with handweights and hanging on a bar in the garage and trying to lift myself up. I've been feeling stronger and thought I was ready to flare that parachute. It was not to be. I pulled the toggles to just below my waist, a bit further than last time, but couldn't get them any further. The instructor had to help me. And they've told me that until I can do a complete flare there's no way they're letting me jump on my own (and nor would I want to!).

  Car talk _POSTEDBY cat -
Remember the July 11 post from Colin, looking for historical information on what I thought was Uncle John's car? Well, good old David has followed up on this. Here's a picture of the car (not the actual one being discussed, but a picture, nevertheless, so we all know what they're talking about. And here's their correspondence on the subject:

  Sixth jump _POSTEDBY cat -
Still alive! As I drove to the dropzone yesterday (without John, who has a bad cold) I became increasingly nervous about the upcoming jump, especially after nearly killing myself off last week. As I left Houston I was thinking of lots of good reasons to turn around (too windy, too bloody scared, etc.), but there were too many reasons not to turn around (the jump was paid for, I'd bought them kolaches, I really needed to jump out of an aeroplane, and I'd feel obliged to go into work).

  Cathy. Flare! _POSTEDBY cat -
My first solo skydive did not go well. I went up there on Thursday as planned but it was too windy for students. Rather than wait around for it to die down, I left and went back early on Friday morning, after calling my boss to see if I could get another day off.

John drove me up there on Friday morning. I was assigned an instructor, and was given about two hours of more instruction. It's amazing how much stuff there is to go through. Things like calculating the size of the parachute according to my weight, checking every part of the equipment at least three times, drills in "Malfunction Junction," practice arches and practice pulls on a wooden board that swivels around (not sure what they call that), practice aircraft exits, fill out pop quiz, study landing area and wind direction and draw a diagram of the approach to landing. Everything was covered. When it came time to jump I felt I was ready.

  More skydiving _POSTEDBY cat -
Greetings, Habs. Remember that 60th birthday skydive I did back in March? Well, life hasn't really been the same since. I have jumped three more times since then and don't think about much else except when the next jump will be. Now, please don't think your sister/aunt/great aunt/friend has gone off her rocker. I don't THINK I have. But that freefall adrenalin rush is difficult to ignore.

I've taken this very slowly and have read everything I could get my hands on about the sport. All four jumps so far have been tandem jumps; i.e. with an instructor. On each jump, though, I've learnt a little more . . . how to make 360-degree turns, how to track, how to control the canopy (yep, you don't call it a parachute), etc. Then last Friday night I went to a four-hour ground school and learnt a whole lot more.

So what's next? My first solo jump! On Thursday morning. HELP! I'll be doing something called AFF (Accelerated Free Fall). Jump at 14,000 feet with an instructor holding on to me to keep me stable. Pull at 5,000 feet, at which time the instructor flies away . HELP! Then I'm on my own to find my way back to the dropzone and land without breaking my ankles. My heart is thumping just typing this.

So there you have it. I'll let you know how it went.

  "Olympic Spectacle" _POSTEDBY cat -
John just forwarded me this article by Mark Steyn. Every sentence has me laughing. A sample:
In 21st-century London, traffic moves at fewer miles per hour than it did before the internal-combustion engine was invented without the added complication of fleets of Third World thug bureaucrats and the permanent floating crap game of transnationalist freeloaders being dumped on its medieval street plan.
How are you all coping, Habs?

I do have to say that I'm enjoying the Olympics from this side of the Atlantic and have only been getting about five hours of sleep per night. The Opening Ceremonies, although rather strange at times, had me quite choked up. The Queen, perhaps, went a little far allowing the skydiving scene. Rowan Atkinson was hilarious.

Anyway, back to the TV. I've just finished watching yesterday's events. Now to start on today's. It's lucky John's such a geek. We have the hard-drive capacity to record everything throughout the day and keep it as long as we like.

  Jury duty _POSTEDBY cat -
I reported for jury duty on Monday for the fifth time in my life. My longest previous service was about half an hour in traffic court, after which the judge threw the case out. This time it was different. 81 of us were interviewed for one trial. The defendant was accused of sexual indecency with a 7-year-old girl. 12 of us were picked and there were 2 alternates. It was an extremely draining experience, as you can imagine. The girl (who had just turned 9) testified and was a credible witness. Her great grandmother and great grandmother's friend told the same story. A counsellor also testified. And a sheriff testified. We were played an audio CD of his interview in his car with the defendant, during which the defendant changed his story three times.

Ten of us were convinced that the guy was guilty. The other two came around after about three hours of heated argument. From what we heard, I felt that this was the first time it had happened, and knew that if we found him guilty his whole life would change. He'd be a registered sex offender and would have difficulty finding employment for the rest of his life. The fact remained, though, that he'd done what he was accused of, and we had to find him guilty. He broke down when the verdict was read, and so did several members of the victim's family.

The lawyers came into the deliberation room afterwards to thank us for our service and asked us if we had any questions. I asked them what they expected the sentence to be. They said that he was going back to jail as he'd violated his probation. Turned out he had a string of offences, including a sexual offence while a minor. Hearing this made for good closure.

We got it right.

The Judge's sentence was 36 years (18 mandatory)
